A spreadsheet program such as Microsoft Excel is specifically designed for creating, managing and presenting information in tabular format. A new spreadsheet is simply a large table with blank cells in which the user can enter information. Spreadsheets are more versatile than word processors in terms of their ability to manipulate large numbers of rows and columns of information. For example, spreadsheets can convert data in tabular format to detailed pie charts, line charts or other types of graphs.
Instead of using two-dimensional cells, some spreadsheets are organized by objects, which are variables with a number of attributes attached. This allows the data to be viewed, analyzed and mapped in a number of different ways.
