A spreadsheet program such as Microsoft Excel is specifically designed for creating, managing and presenting information in tabular format. A new spreadsheet is simply a large table with blank cells in which the user can enter information. Spreadsheets are more versatile than word processors in terms of their ability to manipulate large numbers of rows and columns of information. For example, spreadsheets can convert data in tabular format to detailed pie charts, line charts or other types of graphs.
An active worksheet is the worksheet that is currently open. For example, in the picture above, the sheet tabs at the bottom of the window show "Sheet1", "Sheet2", and "Sheet3", with Sheet1 being the active worksheet. The active tab usually has a white background behind the tab name.
